From the words of Anne Engum, a young girl who immigrated to the United States from Norway in the 1860’s. She settled in Coon Valley, Wisconsin, and her family home is preserved at Norskedalen still today!

Norskedalen staff and experts developed this course for students in grades 3-5, although teachers of any age group can modify content to suit the needs of their students.

Through letters written to her friends and family back in Norway, learn the push and pull factors that brought immigrants to the United States, and the challenges they faced. Learn how they overcame challenges in cultural adaptation, missing their homeland, learning to farm this new land, using their limited resources, and protecting their natural resources for the future.

Each lesson has optional Science, English/Language Arts, Math, or History/Social Studies lessons to accompany the main letter. Teachers can use any or all of the included activities for any lesson!

This curriculum is perfect for Home School students as well. Schools and home schools can arrange for a trip to the historic sites at Norskedalen to accompany this curriculum.
